What's my rule?

With third graders we are starting on equations and in and out rules. If you use the "Everyday Math" series, you should be familiar with these "math machines." I created a life size machine for someone to wear and I think it's a fun way to motivate the students! One child will wear the "machine" while another student can put a number into the in opening. Have the students discuss on what number will come out based on the rule provided. This is an interactive tool that I am excited to share! Click more to see how I created this!

1.

  • Cardboard
  • Paint and brush
  • Hot glue gun
  • String
  • Sharpie paint marker
  • Duct tape
  • Plastic Sleeve
  • Paper
  • Scissors

2. Cut the ends flaps

3. Paint the cardboard a color of your choice.

4. While paint is drying, place your paper into the plastic sleeve. I used a card-stock paper that had a hint of blue. I love using card-stock because it is a lot stronger!
5. Cut the flap of your plastic sleeve so that it doesn't get in the way when you tape it.

6. Once dry, duct tape the sides of the plastic sleeve on to your cardboard. Laminating a piece of paper will also work great because it won't have the bubbles in it.

7. Cut the flaps into shapes like this. Make the narrow end longer than usual.

8. Glue the narrow end to the big piece of cardboard.

10. For extra support duct tape it on the back!

11. Write down your text with a sharpie paint marker.

12. Add string to back and decorate to your liking!
